Historic Suchitoto, El Salvador

Some of Suchitoto's famous cobblestones
Suchitoto is an important historic and cultural town in the hills above Suchitlan Lake, well known for it's cobblestoned streets. It is a popular weekend and vacation destination for El Salvadorans and tourists alike.

About an hour northeast of San Salvador, travelers can find Suchitoto easily with our El Salvador GPS Map. Here are some things to see in Suchitoto:

Iglesia Santa Lucía - Built in 1853, the church is the focal point of the historic town, facing onto a plaza where residents gather in the cool evenings. The church is one of the best examples of post-colonial architecture in El Salvador and you'll often find the nuns visiting with town residents in the plaza.

Iglesia Santa Lucia
Cascada Los Tercios - A unique geologic waterfall made up of hexagonal columns of rock. Water flows
over them between May and November, however it is worth a visit to see the rock formations even in the dry season. The waterfall is located 1.5km from town and there is a small scramble through rocks and trees to see the best view of the falls. Salto El Cubo and Los Limones are other waterfalls in the area worth visiting.

Turicentro Puerto San Juan - Along the banks of La
ke Suchitlan down the hill from town is a small tourist center. Although there are some swimming pools, restaurants and craft sellers the main attraction is a boat tour around the lake. For a small fee you'll get your own private tour explaining birds, islands, the history of the lake and anything else from the friendly captains. Try to go in the early evening as the sunset is best from the water.

Cascada Los Tercios
Cinquera - A guerrilla stronghold during the civil war, this small town is a short drive from Suchitoto. Historical markers include touring through a guerrilla encampment and kitchen designed to disperse smoke to avoid detection. The Cinquera Forest provides 5,320 hectares of protected terrain with various hiking trails and lookout points.

Ciudad Viejo - Just 9km from Suchitoto, this archeological site is the original capital city of El Salvador founded in 1528. Foundations of the buildings are located there including the first Catholic Church in the country.

Amazing Cerro Verde National Park, El Salvador

Volcano Izalco, El Salvador
Travelers who want to see the amazing natural wonders of the Cerro Verde National Park must first drive northwest to Santa Ana, and then southwest to the Park. This is easily accomplished with our El Salvador GPS map and your Garmin.  After arriving at the Park, the main attractions are the three volcanoes with dominate the landscape.

Izalco and Cerro Verde, El Salvador
The first is Cerro Verde or Cuntetepeque in Nahuatl, a dormant volcano filled with lush vegetation. The road to the park entrance brings you to the summit where there is a small zip line, a local eatery and some snack stands, a exclusive hotel now in ruins which you can tour and see Izalco from the patio and childrens playgrounds.

Caldera de Santa Ana, El Salvador
Next is Izalco, a Stratovolcano next to Volcano Santa Ana. Once called the "Lighthouse of the Pacific" due to its continuous eruptions from 1770 to 1958, its most recent eruption was in 1966 shortly before a new hotel was completed within the park (which

is now closed). Visitors can climb the peak with guidance from police and guides organized at the Cerro Verde main park buildings. Buses are available to/from Santa Ana on a daily basis.

The third volcano is Santa Ana, the tallest volcano in El Salvador at 2,381 meters above sea level. Hiking to the crater lake is an amazing trek through jungle and volcanic alpine terrain. The summit contains 4 calderas with a lake in the center which you can see boiling water on occasion. It is a 4 hour round trip hike from the Cerro Verde parking lot accompanied by knowledgeable guides and police officers.

You will rarely see a more majestic view than from the tops of these volcanoes. Book your trip and grab our map today!

Ruinas de Tazumal, El Salvador

The Ruins of Tazumal
Tazumal is a unique complex located in the southern portion of the ancient Mesoamerican city of Chalchuapa, in western El Salvador. It's uniqueness comes from three factors: architecture, alignment, and artifacts.

Tazumal's architecture is unique because construction, which began during the Mayan Preclassic period (<250 CE), was interrupted by the eruption of the Ilopango volcano. Construction was not continued for several generations, until some time in the Early to Middle Classic periods (250-650 CE). Because of this break, the Tazumal buildings are significantly larger than the other buildings in the complex, nearly matching other Preclassical ruins in size. The other aspect of it's architecture that makes Tazumal unique is it's alignment. All of the Tazumal buildings face west.
Lastly, artifacts found at Tazumal, particularly green obsidian, suggest stronger links with Mexico than were previously thought to have existed. In fact, archaeologists believe that Tazumal was responsible for extending Mayan reach as far as Teotihuacan. Other Mexican artifacts found here include chacmool sculptures, a jaguar effigy sculpture, and an anthropomorphic sculpture depicting the central Mexican deity Xipe Totec.

Jovan Vukelja GPSTravelMaps Panama GPS Map Regional Expert

We're happy to have Jovan Vukelja of Panama join GPSTravelMaps as a Regional Expert.

Beautiful San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

Jovan is a 35 year old master mariner who currently co-owns and works at a shoreside job in Panama City, Panama.  He has been married for 7 years and has a 3 year old daughter and a soon to be 2 year old boy.  He is a very passionate adventure rider and currently own a BMW F800GS bike, which he take out when the weather is nice in the tropics.  He mostly rides on the weekends with a few extreme members from the BMW Moto Club (Panama Chapter).  They try to go to remote places where the gravel ends.  His non work related travels in the last four years have been to Shanghai, CN and other parts in Asia (visiting a sibling) and also family holidays in the United States and Europe (Deutschland, Spain and Finland).

Lago Arenal Costa Rica

Jovan latest adventure this year was a 12 day trip from Panama to Guatemala with four other friends.  Since he tends to travel by sea, a nice road trip thru Central America was a very humbling experience. On which he was bitten by the adventure bug once again.  Now, he is waiting for the Ferry from Panama to Cartagena to get up and running in order to travel next year for a South American journey.  If that does not go,then he already has secured a spot for a moto tour thru Germany and Switzerland next summer.

Jovan has sent GPSTravelMaps tracks and waypoints (click here to learn how) in the past.  Panama has had an endless rainy season. Due to this, he has been sticking to marked roads lately. Jovan says "I have not sent any NEW tracks to the administrators. But, I'm up for the challenge to go where ever I need to go in order to contribute to the mapping of my country".

We welcome you to the GPSTravelMaps.com family. We appreciate you helping make the Panama GPS map one of the best on the market with your local knowledge.
